The Collegiate Church of Saint-Denis de Liège is part of the religious heritage of Liege. It was founded in 987, during the reign of Prince Bishop Notger, by three brothers Nithard, John and Godescalc. Burned by lightning in 1003, the church was rebuilt by Notger and dedicated in 1011 by Balderic II. The original building was built in the first enclosure of the city and the tower in strong sandstone was part of the defensive system of the city.
